Getting Back to My Roots

Feb 2021 ICONIC LIFE Publisher Letter from Renee Dee

Laura Novak

Publisher Renee Dee shares her letter on how a return to print magazine publishing today is an opportunity born three decades ago.

This month marks the start to our quarterly publishing schedule for ICONIC LIFE in print, and it’s been such a joy to get back to creating a print magazine. If you love what you do, you know how I feel. The opportunity to be creative is so fun for me.

This month marks the start to our quarterly publishing schedule for ICONIC LIFE in print, and it’s been such a joy to get back to creating a print magazine. If you love what you do, you know how I feel. The opportunity to be creative is so fun for me.

We launched ICONIC LIFE three years ago as a digital luxury lifestyle magazine with fresh content published daily. When we produced our first print magazine a year ago, it felt like the perfect companion to what we were already doing.

I don’t often indulge the opportunity to tell my own story, but as we enter this new year, my intention is to deepen my relationship with you, our readers and social media followers, to further key into delivering content that is inspiring and of value to you. In fact, I would be thrilled to hear from you on what you’re loving and what you’d like to see more of. So, here is where it all began and why I love doing what I do so much!

My publishing journey began more than ten years before I published my first issue of a print magazine. In fact, I selected the university I would attend based on a pre-considered plan for launching my career as a young woman who would work in a big-time national publishing company. Indeed, I gained employment with a successful Fortune 500 publishing company, Meredith Corporation. How I got THAT job is a wonderful story in itself.

The call to curate luxury content, create beauty and tell the stories of innovators making an elegant mark in the world never left me.

However, my story is not one of climbing the ladder of corporate success during my four years in my dream publishing job; I instead opted for the high-risk enterprise of entrepreneurship.

You see, during my time at Meredith, I was put in the position of learning from the greatest minds in publishing, as the editor of the employee print magazine for a publishing company. That meant, the CEO, group presidents and every leader in every department of publishing success was fodder for my job, and I interviewed each and every one of them with vigor, extraordinary curiosity and appetite for knowledge.

So, when I decided to become an entrepreneur (aka: quit my job) and launch a new luxury title some years ago, I knew enough to be dangerous and not enough to be scared from the venture.

In the end, it was a wonderful journey with many happy clients and even more friends made. I closed that chapter with the satisfaction of success and the opportunity to embrace my next chapter—motherhood and eventually other businesses like a boutique marketing agency and a leadership training company.

But the siren song of publishing continued to call me. The call to curate luxury content, create beauty and tell the stories of innovators making an elegant mark in the world never left me. When we launched ICONIC LIFE in March of 2018, we were strictly digital, reaching a luxury-loving audience with fresh content daily online.

Exactly two years later, our ICONIC HAUS, luxury designer showhouse experience inspired me to commemorate the spectacular event with a print edition of ICONIC LIFE magazine—unbeknownst to me, 45 days before everything would be shut down by COVID19. In hindsight, I am so grateful to have had an in-hand expression of the work of so many to make ICONIC HAUS a reality. And our print edition made everything real in our new virtual ICONIC HAUS tour environment. And I was back in print!

Fast-forward to today, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to Live Beautifully with you online and in our print pages as we crave a return to life as we knew it. While I do not feel things will ever be the same, optimistic me thinks life could be better than ever as we have learned so much and focused on what matters the most. We have a chance to rebuild our lives with intention for what we value and what inspires us.

Some three decades later, I’ve returned to my roots with a print magazine with immeasurable joy, supreme satisfaction and daily inspiration to Live Beautifully with all of you!

Sometimes in a world of dramatic change, some things simply never change.

With Gratitude,

Renee M. Dee
