The Jewish menorah lit nightly during the eight days of Hanukkah has captured the attention of designers. From modern lines to embellished beauties, these unique menorah designs are ICONIC symbols of Hanukkah truly light up the night.
The original Menorah is a multi-branched candelabra used in the religious rituals of Judaism, and it has been revered and respected in both ancient and modern Israel, and around the world for more than 3,000 years. The seven-branched traditional menorah, depicted in ancient art, stone carvings and sculpture, was originally found in the Temple in Jerusalem. The religious writings say that the seven-branch menorah is not allowed to be used outside the Temple and it is the oldest, most enduring artifact.
For that reason, an eight-branched menorah modeled after the Temple menorah is used by Jewish people in religious rites during the eight-day December celebration of Hanukkah. The Hanukkah menorah therefore has eight main branches, plus the raised ninth lamp set apart as the shamash (servant) light which is used to kindle the other lights. This type of menorah is called a hanukiah in Modern Hebrew. The eight lamps symbolize the eight days that one night of oil continued to burn. Modern Menorahs—whether silver, gold, pewter or iron—are special symbolic treasures that are handed down through generations of families and gifted to newly married couples for family worship in their new homes, making them cherished pieces to display.
