These Easy DIY Halloween Decorations Will Haunt Your Home (In the Best Way)

A table with carved pumpkins and candles.
These budget-friendly, spine-tingling Halloween decor ideas are so good, it’s scary.

October is my favorite month of the year. I love the autumn colored leaves that fall from trees, although we don’t get much of that in Arizona. I love all things pumpkin, scary movies, dressing up for Halloween, haunted houses, the list goes on. One of my absolute favorite parts of this time of year is the Halloween and fall-inspired decorations. Here is a list of festive DIY decor to spice up any space

Floating Cheesecloth Ghosts

  • Supplies: Cheesecloth, white balloons or styrofoam balls, liquid starch (or a water + glue mix), black felt or paper.
  • How to:
    • Blow up a balloon or prop a styrofoam ball on a cup to create a “head.”
    • Drape cheesecloth over it, then brush on starch until the fabric is stiff.
    • Let it dry overnight.
    • Pop the balloon/remove the ball, then add felt eyes and a mouth.
  • Result: Lightweight ghosts that look like they’re floating—hang them from a fishing line or place them on tables.

Floating Candles From the Ceiling

Supplies: batteries, LED tapered Candles, fishing line, Command strips.

How to:

  • Insert batteries into each LED tapered candle and test the on/off function.
  • Tie a long piece of clear fishing line to the base of the candle’s flame. Ensure the knot is in the center for even hanging.
  • Attach the fishing line to the ceiling using Command Hooks, or by threading and knotting the line through ceiling eye hooks.
  • Trim the fishing line and re-tie the knot to achieve the desired hanging height for each candle.

Result: You get a mystical look of candles that appear to be levitating, almost as if you cast a spell.

Skeleton in a cage:

How to:

  • Grab one of the wire baskets and place the skeleton inside.
  • Grab the second wire basket and place it on top.
  • Zip tie the two baskets together, creating the “cage,”
  • Hang the skeleton in a place of your liking using the string.

Result: A hauntingly fun dungeon for your deceased figurine.
