Transforming Spaces: Earth and Images Create a Timeless Artistic Retreat

Backyard

Artistry meets interior design for this exquisite California home.

To an artist, a home is more than a structure: It’s a canvas, a story woven from colors, textures and light. When artists and interior designers meet, you know something magical is about to ensue. The result of this collaboration is a stunning home that defies the trends, embracing the color, character and warmth that turns a house into a home.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS: EARTH AND IMAGES

Founded by Isabel Dellinger Candelaria and supported by Principal Interior Designer Nikka Bochniak, Earth and Images specializes in creating spaces that feel both personal and timeless.

This project came about from a long-time client, Marcia Johnson, who knew she needed a lush retreat that also maintained her cultivated personal touch.

“She was captivated by the expansive grounds and natural beauty,” Bochniak reflects.”While she adored the space, she needed our expertise to help make the house truly feel like her own.”

Transitioning from a beachfront property to a home embraced by lush greenery, the client sought to infuse her new abode with personal significance. For Earth and Images, the design challenge was to integrate cherished pieces from her previous residence while crafting a space uniquely reflective of her evolving aesthetic.

THE COLOR PALETTE

Marica, the homeowner and artist, loves earthy and atmospheric hues, making for a color palette filled with rich aubergines, chocolates, coffees, misty greens and lovely creams and neutrals. Dellinger and Bochniak utilized unifying textures to weave it all together, which played a key role in adding depth and comfort, creating a cohesive and inviting ambiance.

STRIKING STATEMENTS

The client’s artistic eye meant every furnishing choice was a statement.

“The furniture strikes a perfect balance between inviting comfort and aesthetic appeal, which was intentional,” explains Bochniak.

Whether in the kitchen, living spaces or bedroom, each room is adorned with eye-catching pieces. Some standouts include a plush chaise, upholstered in Designers Guild Pellenport Fabric for a rich, textured look that pays homage to the florals adorning the exterior.

“There is nothing better than working for an artist as she is because of her unique understanding of color and texture,” says Candelaria.

The living room centers around a stunning glass coffee table by John Pomp, its gradient mimicking the home’s natural surroundings. In the dining area, a chandelier– also designed by Pomp– hangs with hand-cast glass crystals suspended from a metal frame, adding sophisticated glamour and complementing the panoramic views.

Neither of the aforementioned elements outshine the client’s ceramics, which she created herself in her studio, adorning the home with truly unique aspects of personalization.

“Placed throughout the home and forever changing, these pieces add a playfulness and reflect a genuine love for nature throughout the spaces,” Candelaria says.

LIVING SPACES: CIRCLES OF CONNECTION

When it came to the living area and game room, it was all about making a circular connection. Inspired by nature and designed to showcase its beauty, both rooms ooze with circular motifs, creating a dynamic flow.

“This room was all about continuous circular motion,” explains Candelaria. “From the pillow fabric pattern to the TARACEA sofa table piece with log leg supports and even the protea flowers on the hearth of the fireplace.”

The oversized sectional, filled with pillows featuring a beloved circular fabric pattern, invites gatherings.

“I love the collectiveness of the living room. All of the textures, colors and shapes of this space make it one of the most interesting and the most livable,” says Candelaria.

A HARMONIOUS FINALE

This balance of comfort, striking design and pure artistry found its way to the lush backyard– the main reason Johnson purchased the home. Emphasizing sustainability, the design repurposes existing furniture from the client’s previous house, creating a serene outdoor sanctuary.

“We designed intimate nooks that offer both relaxation and versatility,” Bochniak says. The gardens, a masterpiece of blooms and greenery, seamlessly connect the patio space with the natural world.

This home stands as a testament to the collaborative vision of Earth and Images and their client; it’s a haven where design and nature exist in perfect harmony. The best way to know if your work is accomplished, however? Seeing your client in action.

“When we were at the client’s home doing a photoshoot, she happened to be hosting a book club,” Candelaria shares. “It was remarkable to hear it in action–the soft shattering of voices and vibrant laughter. That moment brought the home’s purpose full circle.”
