From the the first wellness resort in a suitably named place called Carefree, Arizona to a historic hotel in a German spa town, discover these five healthy living resorts.
CIVANA Carefree, Arizona
Civana is metro one of the first Arizona wellness retreats that’s designed for travelers to discover “next generation wellness.” Founded by the names behind wellness powerhouses like Miraval and Canyon Ranch, Civana is designed around four pillars: Discovery and Enrichment, Healing Arts/Spa, Healthy Cuisine and Movement. Although it first opened in 2017, the spa made its debut in December of 2018, marking the completion of the property. Guests can look forward to a state-of-the-art 22,000 square foot spa. The spa—which stands for Salus Per Aquam or health through water—features hydrotherapy like tepidarium, hot/cold walking pools, a cold plunge shower, an outdoor adults-only pool, a Watsu treatment pool and a saunarium.
Treatments include a variety of massages, body wraps, Eastern therapies and facials. When guests aren’t receiving treatments in one of the 29 rooms, they can enjoy healthy cuisine from Café Meto, where they can dig into nutrient-rich spinach salads in addition to hot and cold bowls. Before or after treatments, guests can take in mountain views from the 1,600-square-foot relaxation lounge on the second floor. Guests who book the Immerse package designed for the spa enthusiast will receive one daily 60-minute spa treatment, a daily $50 dining credit, a stainless steel bottle, access to a state-of-the-art fitness center and up to 12 fitness and movement classes including aerial yoga, pickleball, hiking and TRX.
MIRAVAL Tucson, Arizona and Austin, Texas
Since 1995, the name Miraval has been synonymous with wellness. The company’s all-inclusive flagship Tucson, Arizona spa resorts aim to help visitors achieve “life in balance, healing the whole self and engaging in the present moment.” Oprah, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and Ellen DeGeneres are all fans. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil desert setting complete with water features and cactus throughout the property in a luxe environment.
The newest lodging option is The Retreat at Miraval, a collection of 22 suites for two to 20 people. Each has a separate entrance, a bed topped with plush linens, an indoor-to-outdoor shower, private pool or spa and mountain views. Many even include a full gourmet kitchen, where guests can book private cooking services. Miraval offers more than 120 complimentary wellness activities, lectures and fitness classes. Guests can hike, practice yoga, ride horses, participate in cardio drumming, zipline and take cooking classes where you clean healthy cooking tips from the property’s chefs. The Life in Balance spa seeks to connect spa-goers to the outdoors. Many treatments are administered in rooms that open to the outdoors. You may hear rain falling from the sky as a therapist massages you. Expect a plethora of treatments including massages, Eastern therapies like acupuncture and Thai massage, hair, salon and skin care services like facials.
Newly opened this month is the Austin, Texas location that will be its second full-scale resort outside of its Arizona retreats location. Sprawling across 220 acres overlooking Lake Travis, Miraval Austin will feature 117 rooms and suites, a state-of-the-art Life in Balance Spa, Body Mindfulness Center, Cypress Creek Organic Farm and Ranch, Life in Balance Culinary Kitchen, full-service restaurant, smoothie bar, Hill Country Challenge Courses, two infinity pools, and outdoor meeting and event facilities.

AMATARA WELLNESS RESORT Phuket, Thailand
Amatara Wellness Resort is situated on a breathtaking slice of paradise on the Thai island of Phuket overlooking the bright blue waters of the Andaman Sea. About 15 minutes from bustling Phuket Town, Amatara seeks to guide guests on a “personal journey to your most vibrant self.” Amatara offers six signature wellness packages that guests can book to jump start their healthy-living goals. BRENNERS PARK – HOTEL & SPA Baden-Baden, Germany
Since 1872, the traveling elite have flocked to Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa for luxury and wellness. Located in the German spa town of Baden-Baden (Baden literally means “to bathe” in German), the hotel with a renowned spa has hosted the likes of Victoria Beckham and Barack Obama. Guests who book the “Stay Fit, Stay Healthy” package can look forward to welcome fruits and sparkling water, choice of biking or hiking tour, kickboxing, Tabata bootcamp session, functional training or faszia training, “Bodyworks meets Yoga” or Pilates, and spa access. The hotel’s wellness center Villa Stéphanie is housed inside a mansion overlooking historic park Lichtentaler Allee and is entirely dedicated to health. Guests can find medical care, personal training, weight loss and detox, spa and fitness here. The spa features a sauna, a hammam, a swimming pool where windows open to the mansion’s private park, a plunge pool, a ladies’ sauna and a private sauna.

Guests can book a variety of treatments including massages, facials, a Bamford Body Signature treatment that’s a combo of Shiatsu, Meridian and Swedish massage techniques and a Hammam signature treatment. Guests can rest their heads in the Royal Suite, which occupies the entire ground floor of Brenners’ Parkvilla and even has its own entrance. The three-bedroom suite decked out in understated yet elegant décor also features a large sitting area with French doors that open to your own private garden.
COMO-SHAMBHALA-ESTATE Bali, Indonesia
Take one lush jungle setting, throw in a luxurious villa hotel with a special focus on wellness, and you have the stunning COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali. Just six miles outside of Ubud on the banks of the Ayung River, this tropical resort promises to help visitors change their lives in meaningful ways. Wellness programs are broken up into four pillars: Ayurveda, Cleanse, Be Active and Bespoke. If you book the Cleanse package, you can expect to consult with one of the resort’s wellness experts, eat a prescribed diet from the on-site restaurants, choice of cleansing treatment or massage, and a personal activity schedule.
