This Cave Creek home exemplifies how thoughtful design and sustainability can harmonize with the natural landscape, providing a perfect haven for family life and personal passions.

Perched on a 4.3-acre hillside in Cave Creek, Ariz., this 7,000-square-foot residence envisioned and brought to life by Tate Studio Architects blends breathtaking views, modern luxury and innovative design. Tailored to fit the active lifestyle of its owners, the home offers a harmonious balance between elegance and practicality. With its thoughtful design, this forever home captures the spirit of indoor-outdoor living while prioritizing sustainability and creative architectural solutions.

Built for a family of five, the modern residence serves as both a serene retreat from the demands of everyday life and a vibrant hub for entertaining. Every detail of the home reflects the distinct passions of its owners—a tennis enthusiast and a classic car collector. Their active involvement throughout the design process shaped key elements of the home, including a luxurious outdoor space, a tennis court and a secondary garage and workshop to house a car collection.

Maximizing the stunning mountain views was equally important, and the Tate Studio Architects team met the challenge by creating a design that integrates these features without compromising functionality or aesthetic appeal.

While a home on the mountainside is ideal for many, the steep and rocky terrain presented a significant challenge, with a 36-foot elevation change requiring innovative solutions. “Due to building height restrictions in the area, a balance between cut and fill and working with the existing topography needed to be found in order to get the best views and not feel sunken into the property,” explains Mark A. Tate, AIA, principal of Tate Studio Architects.

This meticulous balance resulted in standout features such as a basement-level garage and planting beds that unfold effortlessly with the topography to the entry. The hard excavation work, while costly, allowed for the creation of an exposed rock face instead of a traditional retaining wall. By integrating planting beds and accent lighting into this natural element, the design transformed a challenging constraint into a stunning focal point of the outdoor living space.

The surrounding desert landscape also served as a profound influence on the home’s design. The backyard was oriented to face the undisturbed hillside, offering privacy and breathtaking views from any angle. The primary suite, intentionally positioned on the eastern wing, takes full advantage of the panoramic mountain vistas, creating a serene retreat for the homeowners and an undeniably beautiful way to start each day.

Indoor-outdoor living is a central theme throughout the residence. Full-width stacked sliding glass doors connect the main living spaces to the patio, which features a reflecting black-tiled pool with zero and negative edges, as well as spa and lounge areas. Both wings of the home embrace the outdoor space, with long galleries providing unobstructed views and easy access to the pool. This design allows every room to maintain a strong connection to the surrounding natural beauty.

The Tate Studio Architects team integrated several eco-friendly elements into the home’s design without compromising on luxury. “High-efficiency glass, polished concrete floors and lightly colored masonry blocks are a few design elements that make the home more energy-efficient,” notes Justine Chandler, architectural director at Tate Studio Architects. The outstanding installation and use of masonry were recognized with an Excellence in Masonry Architectural Citation Award from the Arizona Masonry Council in 2024.

The home’s interior aesthetic mirrors its sleek, modern exterior. Polished concrete floors provide durability and a refined look, while custom details elevate the overall design. Notable features include custom pocket bedroom doors designed by Tate Studio and a striking metal-paneled fireplace fabricated by Wedge Designs. “Finding the balance between functionality and luxury came easily, as we designed for both from the beginning,” Chandler points out.

The home’s floor plan was thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of a family of five while offering space for individual hobbies and relaxation. The west wing houses two guest suites, a laundry room, a powder bathroom and access to the main garage. When you wander over to the east wing, you will find the exercise room, theater and an additional guest suite, ensuring privacy and separation for their three children when they come home to visit.

The luxurious retreat’s primary suite features an ensuite deck overlooking the tennis court below. A private path from the suite’s bathroom connects directly to the pool and court, emphasizing convenience and privacy. Below the deck, the secondary garage and workshop house the couple’s classic car collection.

The home’s design prioritizes functionality while maintaining an undeniable sense of luxury. Every detail serves a purpose, from the precision masonry work to the custom finishes. Full-width glass doors, for example, enhance indoor-outdoor connectivity and fill the interiors with natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.

Tate Studio Architects succeeded in creating a home that is as functional as it is breathtaking. The result is a residence that caters to the homeowners’ active lifestyles and passions while providing a welcoming space for their family to enjoy for generations. This modern hillside retreat is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and collaboration, blending luxury and sustainability in perfect harmony.
