Step Into Wellness: The Barefoot Trail Returns to Flagstaff for a Grounding, Mind-Body Experience

A pathway in the woods.
Reconnect with your body, breath and senses at the nation’s first grounding park. Opening May 6, 2026, The Barefoot Trail offers barefoot walks, reflexology stations, yoga, live music and immersive outdoor wellness experiences.

As wellness continues to evolve beyond spa walls and studio doors, one thing is becoming clear: true restoration happens when we reconnect with our bodies, not just our schedules. For the 2026 season, The Barefoot Trail—the nation’s first grounding park—is reopening just outside Flagstaff with an expanded focus on embodied wellness, movement and sensory connection.

Opening May 6, 2026, The Barefoot Trail invites guests to step out of their shoes and into a slower, more intuitive relationship with nature—one that engages the feet, the breath and the nervous system all at once.

“Wellness isn’t about tuning everything out,” says Leah Williams, founder of The Barefoot Trail. “It’s about tuning in—to your body, your breath and the environment around you. When people walk the trail barefoot, they start paying attention in a different way.”

A Practice in Presence
The Barefoot Trail experience is built around grounding, or earthing—the practice of walking barefoot on natural surfaces to support nervous system regulation, reduce inflammation and improve overall well-being. Guests move across carefully designed paths that incorporate natural textures and reflexology stations, stimulating pressure points that encourage circulation and relaxation.

But Williams emphasizes that the experience is as much about awareness as it is about movement.

“So many of us live from the neck up,” she says. “The trail brings people back into their bodies. You feel the ground. You notice how you’re walking. You notice how you’re breathing. That’s where healing starts.”

Movement That Meets You Where You Are
In addition to self-guided trail walks, yoga classes are offered throughout the season, allowing guests to deepen their mind–body connection in an outdoor setting. Practiced barefoot and surrounded by pines, the classes emphasize grounding, balance and gentle strength—designed for a wide range of experience levels.

“Wellness isn’t about tuning everything out,” says Leah Williams, founder of The Barefoot Trail. “It’s about tuning in—to your body, your breath and the environment around you. When people walk the trail barefoot, they start paying attention in a different way.”

“Yoga and grounding are incredibly complementary,” Williams says. “When your feet are connected to the earth, poses feel different. People feel more stable, more present and more confident in their bodies.”

These sessions transform the park into a living wellness studio, one where movement feels organic rather than prescribed.

A Living Soundscape
Unlike the hushed silence often associated with wellness spaces, The Barefoot Trail embraces the natural and communal sounds of its environment. For the 2026 season, the park is expanding its live music programming, collaborating with local and regional musicians to create an evolving soundscape throughout the week.

From flute and hand drum performances to acoustic guitarists and full bands on weekends, music becomes another sensory layer—one that invites rhythm, emotion and shared experience.

“Sound is part of how we process the world,” Williams says. “We’re being very intentional about the music we bring in. Whether it’s a solo flute or a weekend band, it adds depth to the experience and helps people feel connected—not just to the land, but to each other.”

A Refined Approach to Outdoor Wellness
For its second season, The Barefoot Trail continues to refine its offerings, with refreshed trail surfaces, enhanced reflexology stations, and expanded spaces designed for rest, stretching, and reflection. Educational elements woven throughout the park introduce guests to grounding, reflexology, and the surrounding natural environment, offering insight without overwhelming the experience.

“This isn’t about escaping life,” Williams says. “It’s about learning how to be present in it—in your body, in nature, and in community.”

A New Kind of Wellness Destination
Set against Flagstaff’s high-elevation pines and cooler summer climate, The Barefoot Trail offers a wellness experience that feels grounded, accessible and deeply human. It attracts solo visitors seeking clarity, couples craving reconnection, families moving together and wellness travelers looking for something more tactile than traditional retreats.

“When people leave, I want them to feel more at home in their bodies than when they arrived,” Williams says. “That’s the real measure of wellness.”

The Barefoot Trail opens for the 2026 season on Wednesday, May 6, and runs through October. Tickets and season passes are available.
