Stefano Ricci and Brand Storytelling

The intersection of brand storytelling and luxury fashion.

In the luxury fashion industry, the power of storytelling cannot be overstated. It is the heartbeat that drives creative vision and innovation. It is also the base for connecting with clients emotionally and creating an emotional response. We live in a reality that I often call “the sea of sameness” because many brands have similar stories and executions. It’s wonderful to see examples that stand out and can be considered best in class.

Stefano Ricci, a luxury brand synonymous with incredible sophistication and worn by the movers and shakers of this world, exemplifies this with a brand story about exploration. “Explore the world to explore ourselves” is the brand’s story, established in 1972. As a brand with exploration as its core value, the fifth mission of the Explorer Project took place in one of the most beautiful parts of the Earth, Cambodia – from ancient temples to untouched nature. I had the pleasure and privilege to explore and experience how Stefano Ricci’s creative process came to life.

The Stefano Ricci team consists of Niccolò Ricci, the brand’s CEO, and Filippo Ricci, the creative director. They embarked on Mission Cambodia with several team members, including the acclaimed photographer Steve McCurry and the invaluable scientific guide Terry D. Garcia, the CEO of Exploration Ventures and one of the most accomplished explorers in the world.

After his first journey to Angkor Wat in the late 1990s, Steve McCurry felt like he had traveled back in time. “Don’t reject the crooked road and don’t take the straight one. Instead, take the one traveled by the ancestors.” This ancient Cambodian expression guided us during the exploration, inviting us to see each detail as a part of creating a lifelong memory.

The power of brand storytelling in fashion

Brand storytelling is the most critical part of any brand that wants to create desirability. It is what I also often refer to as the “script” of the brand, the fabric influencing every design choice, including the brand’s creative direction, messaging and brand experiences.

Stefano Ricci’s recent success, with record revenues of 215 million euros in 2023, a 43% increase compared to 2022, demonstrates how powerful and impactful an excellently crafted and executed story can be. Despite market slowdowns and geopolitical uncertainties, the brand achieved a further 10% growth in the first quarter of 2024, a truly exceptional performance. It underscores the importance of a strategic focus on high-end luxury and the ability to connect deeply with consumers through evocative storytelling.

A journey of inspiration: the Cambodian influence

Filippo Ricci has masterfully integrated the essence of exploring Cambodia into the brand’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection. “When this project was born, I took inspiration from the images of a legend of world photography: Steve McCurry,” Ricci explains. “Working with him in the Khmer temples, in the jungle and on the waters that converge on the Mekong River represents so much more than an experience; it’s a main chapter of life. It’s a journey made of emotions, references to a timeless heritage, to discover the Khmer culture, which dates back to the Middle Ages and continues to speak to us through its architecture, sculptures and that extraordinary world characterized by nature, which is reconquering those ancient stones.”

The collection: a fusion of heritage and modernity

The Spring/Summer 2025 collection by Stefano Ricci is a testament to how brand storytelling can inspire and shape fashion.

“The collection was inspired by a suspended time, full of emotions. An infinite search for elsewhere, also through the style of a man who never tires of exploring the world, outside and within himself,” Filippo Ricci explains. “A timeless elegance which aims to breathe new life into myths of antiquity and clothing, rewriting them through the eyes of nature, the colors of the jungle, the harmony of the bodies of water, the arcane mystery of the temples in the ancient complex of Angkor, projecting them into the present time rich in values, daring undertakings and spiritual energy.”

The lookbook’s collection of 68 outfits features symbolic pieces like the overshirt, crafted with the proper know-how of the Florentine Maison’s sartorial tradition, evoking the comfortable shapes of the 1990s. Military touches with belted waists come in various colors, ranging from natural tones to elephant green, Cambodian sky blue, intense yellows, rust and vibrant orange-reds reminiscent of Buddhist monks’ robes.

A standout piece is the surprisingly light blouson in Nubuck crocodile, symbolizing the uniqueness and true luxury that distinguishes Stefano Ricci. The collection also features rubberized matte crocodile perforated for a lightweight jacket, showcasing a blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. These elements highlight the brand’s commitment to merging historical influences with modern fashion, creating pieces that are not only luxurious but also deeply meaningful.

My favorite is a two-button Fiesole suit, wool and silk in dazzling Stefano Ricci blue—a brand staple color—a stunning piece I can’t wait to wear myself. As a lover of tailored suits, I was speechless seeing it in person during the Cambodia Explorer Mission.

Excellence in execution

In my opinion, Stefano Ricci’s success is a direct result of its authentic and extremely well-executed brand storytelling and meticulous execution. Niccolò Ricci attributes its impressive growth to a strict focus on the high-end sector and fine tailoring, supported by a long-term strategic vision that prioritizes brand integrity, logistics and an expanding distribution network. This approach has allowed Stefano Ricci to thrive even in challenging times, setting a new benchmark for the luxury industry.

During my time with the Stefano Ricci team in Cambodia, I was struck by their professionalism and dedication. Every detail, from the initial concept to the final execution, was handled with the utmost care and precision.

This dedication to excellence is evident in every aspect of the brand, from the design of the garments to the execution of their marketing campaigns. Even more so, the team created an experience money can’t buy, making me feel like a fellow explorer and a part of the family.

The genuine warmth, exceptional hospitality and attention to every aspect created an experience that was true to the brand’s core values and, because of that, incredibly unique.

A call to action for luxury brands

As the market is changing faster than ever before, and clients are craving exceptional brand-specific experiences, brands must embrace the philosophy that true luxury is about creating meaningful memories and telling compelling stories that resonate deeply with their audience.

Stefano Ricci’s latest collection reflects the brand’s ability to fuse tradition with innovation, creating pieces as emotionally resonant as they are visually stunning. It is a journey of timeless elegance, a celebration of heritage and an inspiration for the future of luxury fashion.

By staying true to their brand story and focusing on the emotional connection with their audience, Stefano Ricci sets a new standard in luxury fashion.
