Chardonnay is one of the most enigmatic wine varietals. Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon, which consumers standardly assume to have a rich and fruity profile, Chardonnay takes many forms. A French Chardonnay (aka Chablis and White Burgundy) might be dry, minerally and light bodied. An unoaked California Chardonnay can often be mistaken for a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. And an oaked California Chardonnay is defined by its creamy texture and caramel and vanilla flavors. Queen of this beloved profile is the ICONIC  Rombauer Chardonnay.

As the number one most popular Chardonnay sold in American restaurants (according to a Wine & Spirits Magazine restaurant poll), this California favorite has a thirsty following in Texas, Arizona, Florida, New Jersey and Colorado and is distributed in all 50 states and 38 countries around the world. It has been named a “Top 100 Wines of the World” five times by Wine Spectator, which has given it 18 90+ pt scores over the years. The name and label alone are enough to send hearts racing amongst its many fans.

Why so much love? Rombauer introduced its Chardonnay in 1984 adhering to five core components from which the winery has not strayed for 40 years: 1) ripe fruit from the Carneros region 2) a creamy mid-palate 3) vanilla oak 4) a buttery finish 5) held together by acid. This combination, as well as the “malolactic fermentation” process (which converts malic acid, a tart acid found in Granny Smith apples, to lactic acid, a softer acid found in milk and yogurt), and French and American oak barrel aging, creates Rombauer Chardonnay’s creaminess, resulting in a beautifully balanced wine that keeps enthusiasts returning time and again.
