“I apprenticed the old fashioned way by literally learning from the ‘floor up’,” Basta says. “I began working for my uncle, a very well-trained European jeweler from an early age, and he had me sweeping the shop floors!… When I began working on vintage styles of jewelry and how the pieces were created, I began to understand jewelry. It humbled me to work on period pieces properly, I deconstructed my tools of today and focused on the old-world techniques to get the right results so pieces remained untouched even with extensive repairs. This opened a whole new world of creativity in designing for me, it is a style that inspires me: romantic, organic fluidity.”

“I like to add moving parts or something that articulates to some degree, even if it’s a minor movement. Like a Panda Brooch I made, the Panda has a carved Jade leaf in its’ mouth that moves when you walk; or I have ring conversions that are a ring cloaked within another ring, which gives you two looks in one, I have also created a ring that converts to a pendant by removing the top of the ring because why not! I feel this has become my signature,” Basta says.
