The oceanfront resort Terranea Resort states that it is poised above coastal bluffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. This description paints an apt word picture and would stir anyone’s imagination, but, let me assure you, it’s nothing close to the experience of visiting the only luxury destination resort on the Los Angeles coast in person, as I did recently. From the moment you catch your first view of the splendorous wonder that is Terranea, to when you begrudgingly depart days later, a visit here epitomizes relaxation and enjoyment at every turn, especially now.
The developers took a slice of pure coastal heaven and built a 5-star property on top of it.
The developers took a slice of pure coastal heaven and built a 5-star property on top of it. It’s understandable why Hollywood scene scouts repeatedly shoot parts of movies and television series here, including blockbusters Pirates of the Caribbean, Pearl Harbor, Charlie’s Angels, The Aviator and Fun with Dick and Jane.
While the gentle coastal breezes and oceanfront resort layout seduce your senses, the other aspect I found to be as omnipresent is the staff’s dedication to providing the level of service this resort is known for, even with the challenges of shutdowns and governmental decrees. They made a conscious effort to continue to provide a true luxury experience. A visit here will make that clear.
Because so much of the property is designed for guests to enjoy the natural, outdoor setting, the resort’s dining options are vast. Southern Californians know that Terranea’s restaurants are each worthy of a visit and add to the endless luxuries that make this one of the top resorts in Californa. They are true destinations of their own, with Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts at Catalina Kitchen that require reservations weeks in advance. Completely remodeled in 2017, Catalina Kitchen is the ideal place to start each morning for breakfast.

No matter where you are on the property, there’s a spectacular view, and that includes Nelson’s, a restaurant set on a cliff-top directly above the ocean. It offers a casual dining experience and sunset views that never disappoint. A day of lounging in a pool cabana can be capped off with dinner at Bashi, which features contemporary Pan Asian fare, including signature dishes such as Sizzling Shaking Beef, Crispy Whole Fish and Garlic Noodles. Oh yeah, there’s great views here too!
The oceanfront resort is expansive. It sits on what’s called the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which is without question one of the most scenic spots in So Cal. It’s a 30-minute drive from LAX or SNA, but, when you are on the property, you feel like you are a world away from whatever issues you were dealing with at home. Among the many incredible amenities are the large living areas. In addition to the 34 suites, there are 50 three-bedroom ocean-view casitas and 32 villas that range from 1,850 to 2,800 square feet.
Throughout my visit at this oceanfront resort, I had the opportunity to converse with management, and their determination to provide five-star luxury service despite the challenges they were handed was incredible. It’s part of the Terranea culture to be committed to world-class service, and that was as consistent on my visit as the jaw-dropping views. It is an ideal destination for an unforgettable staycation or weekend getaway. Not even now, but especially now. A visit to Terranea will make you feel rejuvenated, hopeful and eager to return.
