With every decade of my life, the holiday season seem to take on new meaning to me. The first decade was filled with excitement and anticipation for all the magic of Christmas. The next decade was marked by celebrating more with friends. Next, spending time with family near and far drove my holiday intentions. Then becoming a mom—an amazing gift—introduced me to making holidays special for someone else. Throughout my life, all of these things have given me great joy!

Now that my son is blossoming into an adult and starting a business like his mom, the search for new meaning is a shared opportunity. It’s no longer about the scramble for gifts and too many commitments, it’s about spending time together and thinking of others. This year he has many ideas he is excited about, including brainstorming fundraising ideas and getting to work in a service project.
What gives me joy today is being selective, curating my invitations and saying no to an overpacked schedule in favor of staying home to decorate my home, cooking for friends and family (mostly my 19-year-old) and savoring the beauty of the season.
Now, that doesn’t mean I didn’t spend a Saturday—yes, a Saturday—shopping with my friends and clients at Scottsdale Fashion Square, Jimmy Choo, Ferragamo and The Collector’s House…we aren’t Scrooge around here. And my awesome team and I did host several epic ICONIC celebrations this month with our favorite people.

However, we said no to putting up a tree in favor of an afternoon watching our favorite holiday movies. We said no to holiday travel during what will be the busiest travel season we’ve seen for a while to have fun at home. And, we said no to overdoing it in favor of making plans for the future and investing in that. These times have been challenging and protecting one’s peace of mind is a priority.
