Publisher Renee Dee shares her favorite way to disconnect from work while traveling.
I love a good vacation, and I know all the benefits of taking a break, slowing down and recharging my batteries. That said, sometimes even I have a challenging time planning a vacation. I constantly ask myself, “do I have time for this?”
Until.
The plane takes off, and I pull one of my many magazines out of my tote bag. I call them my “transitional items.” By paging through my favorite magazines and slowly moving into reading the articles, I begin to disconnect from my professional pursuits and move into vacation mode. (I know, it’s ironic, isn’t it, that a magazine can take me OUT of a business mindset since that is what I do?)
It’s because I love magazines—just like all of you do. I love the tactile feeling of holding a magazine in my hands, admiring the quality paper and leafing through beautifully designed pages. I think we all just get so much screen time, that we crave the pleasure of paging through a luxurious magazine. It’s like a one-on-one relationship with aspirational thinking.

We like to be transported to lovely places and think about decadent dining; to step into the latest fashions and peruse amazing architecture and design. We love the experience that a magazine provides, which is to bring beauty, luxury and the world to each of us.
Years ago, my transitional item was People Magazine, which represented closing my laptop and clearing my mind, by way of images of Mark Wahlberg leaving Starbucks with his children or Lady Gaga getting green juice on Rodeo Drive. Over the years, People has changed, and now Town & County, Vogue and Architectural Digest are my ultimate escape.
It’s my most sincere hope to give you a little escape every time you open the pages of ICONIC LIFE Magazine, and I hope it inspires you, sparks joy and becomes a happy place for you wherever you may travel and while you are at home.

As I write this on a plane, the wind-down has begun, my favorite magazines await me, and I will see you “on the other side” of my next great adventure, starting now.
