Mastro’s Night: My Culinary Journey & Perfect Cocktail Pairings

Embark on my culinary journey of great cocktails, delicious food and fantastic service at Mastro’s.

It was a perfect night. Between the refreshing cocktails, exquisite seafood, unparalleled service, delectable dessert and the company of one of my best friends, I couldn’t have asked for a better night out. Where did we go? Only one of the best restaurants in town, Mastro’s.

This was my first experience at Mastro’s, and I am proud to say it won’t be my last. Upon arrival, the two hostesses at the door greeted me with bright smiles. They asked what atmosphere we would prefer: a more traditional experience in the main dining room or something casual in the bar and lounge. I always opt for bar seating because I love the laid-back atmosphere and watching the action of skilled mixologists make beautiful signature cocktails.

We were escorted to our table and, shortly after, greeted by our excellent server. When I opened the menu, I was delighted to see a wide range of cocktail options. The wide range of creativity Mastro’s gives its mixologists is one thing mixologist Alex Wolff loves about her job. “I love it when guests want to try something different or give me an opportunity to make them a drink based on their taste or mood at that moment,” she says.

Wolff is an experienced mixologist with more than 20 years of experience. Her commitment to giving guests a unique experience is the driving force behind his passion and skill. 

I want to highlight some of the fantastic cocktails you can try when you visit Mastro’s, so as I go through each dish I had, Wolff recommended a cocktail that would pair perfectly with the meal. 

Our first course was the complimentary bread basket. A bouquet of crostini, pretzel, sourdough and pumpernickel is presented in a beautiful wood basket and served with warm butter. 

The cocktail that would pair perfectly with this staple is the signature Mastro’s Cosmo. A light and fruity cocktail made with orange-infused vodka, Daily’s Triple Sec, a splash of cranberry juice garnished with an orange slice and dry ice for presentational flair.

After trying hard not to fill up too much on bread, we ordered half a dozen Blue Point Oysters on the half shell. Our oysters were beautifully presented on shaved ice with horseradish, cocktail sauce and lemon slices. This was the perfect refreshing starter dish for a fantastic evening to come. 

“Who doesn’t love bubbles with their Oysters!” Wolff says. “The South of France has a hint of citrus and bubbles to complete a wonderful pairing.”

The South of France is a refreshing cocktail with a hint of tartness from the grapefruit zest and bubbly. This cocktail combines Combier Liqueur de Pamplemousse, Citronge, Daily’s Simple Syrup, Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve and a Grapefruit zest. 

My friend and I decided to share two appetizers for our main course. The first was the Mastro’s jumbo lump crab cakes, two crab patties cooked to perfection on a bed of mixed greens and avocado, paired with a homemade tartar sauce and lemon. These crab cakes were perfect for sharing; the flavor profile was delicious, and we savored every bite. 

According to Wolff, citrus flavors and notes pair excellently with seafood; that’s why she recommends ordering the Hibiscus Glow, a medley of Tarragon leaves, lemon, Grey Goose Le Citron Vodka, Monin Hibiscus Syrup and lemon zest all mixed beautifully to create a cocktail that bursts with the citrus flavors and botanicals.

We ordered the white cheddar lobster mac and cheese to accompany our delightful crab cakes and stick to the seafood theme that we were craving that evening. The lobster mixed with the thick creaminess of the cheese melted in my mouth, giving me an elevated taste of one of my favorite dishes from childhood. This wonderfully decadent dish calls for a bold cocktail. 

The Jet Setter plays with the complex flavor profiles you often taste with Bourbon and the sweetness of Aperol. The Jet Setter is made with Wild Turkey Long Branch Bourbon, Meletti Amaro, Aperol, lemon and lemon zest. This bold cocktail will take your tastebuds on a journey and allow you to taste various flavor profiles.

While we were stuffed, we saved some room for dessert. Our server recommended Mastro’s signature warm butter cake, the most popular dessert on their menu, and it did not disappoint.

We expected a slice of cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream when we ordered the dish. To our surprise, a whole cake came out surrounded beautifully by mandarin oranges and fresh strawberries, a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream sat perfectly on the top of the cake and a side of freshly whipped cream came on the side in a beautiful silver dish. 

The combination of sweet and salty makes this dessert the perfect ending to a beautiful evening. 

To mimic the flavors of the butter cake, Wolff recommends the Salted Caramel Martini. A delectable cocktail made with Belvedere Organic Vodka, Dorda Sea Salt Caramel Liqueur, Tuaca, and Maldon Sea Salt rim that will end your night with a sweet taste in your mouth.

My experience at Mastro’s was unique; every dish was cooked and presented with care, and the staff was enthusiastic and passionate about delivering unmatched service. They took the time to get to know you and recommend the best dishes for your experience. 

Whether planning a romantic date night with your significant other or having happy hour with your close friends, Mastro’s is the place to go. The restaurant perfectly blends an electric atmosphere with elevation and sophistication. I can’t wait to go back.
