ASeattle couple decided to splurge on a luxury unit with one-of-a-kind views of Seattle. The clients had lived in downtown Seattle for years, but as the city grew, the risk of a dramatically altered or lost view became a stark reality. When the clients became aware of the Rainier Square Tower building—Seattle’s newest and tallest residential tower—they jumped at the opportunity to create a home to fit their needs. Their dream was to live in the clouds, and this was the closest thing to it.
The newly created 57th-floor, 4,000-square-foot residence provides nearly 360-degree views of the city and its bordering landscape, including views of Mt. Rainier, the Cascade Mountains and Mt. Baker. The design combines three luxury units into one continuous residence with expansive views that seamlessly unite spaces for an open, airy atmosphere fitting for the high-rise locale.

The homeowners wanted the ability to have unobstructed views from anywhere in their home. However, with a sprawling footprint, the design team recognized that an entirely open floor plan would feel uncomfortably vast. “We didn’t want the interior to resemble a giant warehouse,” notes architect Michael Troyer with Studio AM Architecture and Interiors.
The solution involved integrating a set of movable walls that dynamically reshape the interior spaces.
“Fixed walls would have prevented the clients from seeing around corners and through different spaces,” Troyer notes. “These movable walls were crucial in achieving their desired spatial experience.” The design approach transforms the home into a dynamic, adaptable environment that responds to the occupants’ changing needs and desires.
The main entrance was designed to provide a grand, awe-inspiring view immediately upon entry. Upon crossing the threshold, the residence unfolds as a series of shape-shifting contiguous spaces that radiate from a central living area and kitchen.
The heart of the residence is the main living area, a central nexus linking the kitchen and dining area, office spaces and the primary suite. While maintaining traditional enclosures for bathrooms and utility areas, movable walls create a flexible living environment.

Here, bespoke finishes and textures such as a glass-beaded wall treatment and pops of brass and blue accents create richness in the space, which, along with gently curving walls and furnishings, create a warm, welcoming aesthetic that balances rather than detracts from the expansive views.
In the kitchen, the glamor approach is reflected in a ceiling topped in mother-of-pearl, which adds luminosity, while a tile brass and marble backsplash adds elegance. Polished granite countertops reflect light and are grounded by warm oak cabinetry.
The guest suite is adjacent to the dining room and includes a pivoting secondary entry door. When the owners are alone, walls and doors can remain open, preserving unobstructed views. Conversely, when guests—including grown children and grandchildren–are visiting, everything can be closed to ensure privacy.

The material palette drew inspiration directly from the client’s bright personality. “The client would arrive at meetings in sparkly dresses, dazzling jewelry, and statement shoes,” Danielle Krieg, an interior designer with Studio AM Architecture and Interiors, notes.
A custom-designed bed screen, a glass-wrapped fireplace, which separates the office from the living room, and a bespoke brass light fixture are all examples of design that reflects the client’s style. However, it’s the acrylic and gold piano and a striking 660-gallon curved saltwater aquarium that takes center stage.
The design balances glamor with warmth and comfort, seamlessly marrying functionality with artistic expression: space that is at once open, intimate and deeply personal.
