It’s a beautiful day for a bike ride. I can hear the tune of Van Morrison’s “Moondance.” Summer is for songs that bring back memories, and it’s time to travel on two wheels to create new ones.

You may have been exploring the world from the screen of your Peloton cycle, but the country awaits. Bicycling lovers looking to venture further from home this year are in luck, with many resorts including new and improved luxury bike ride tour programs.

It’s time to get on the road and get your petals going! The wind in your face, the sun on your skin and scenic vistas await.

Here are some of the best luxury trips and tours for bike ride lovers in 2021. Whether you are looking for a southern moss-lined dirt road, a desert ride or heli-biking in the Alaska backcountry, these experiences offer something for every level of rider.

Tutka Bay Lodge luxury resort activities

Within the Wild

The Alaska adventure company, Within the Wild, made up of Winterlake Lodge and Tutka Bay Lodge, offers backcountry bike ride and tour adventures for everyone from expert riders to novice explorers. Taking advantage of the incredible uniqueness of the surrounding landscape, both lodges have designed their biking excursions to showcase the diverse and boundless biking opportunities only Alaska has to offer.

Once-in-a-lifetime locations include fat tire biking down the Iditarod trail and heli-biking on the region’s active volcanic islands in multi-day cycling trips.

Traveler’s Rest is becoming a go-to place for cycling enthusiasts to live and visit. The Blue Ridge Mountains offer the perfect challenge for advanced bike lovers, but there are also some short and flat trails that are simple enough for even the least experienced rider to enjoy.

Located right on the strand, you’re literally on a 26-mile bike ride path on the edge of the sand, with crashing waves over your shoulder.

The Beach House

One of my fave and casual California beachfront resorts is Beach House in Hermosa Beach. Located right on the strand, you’re literally on a 26-mile bike ride path on the edge of the sand, with crashing waves over your shoulder, going from Redondo Beach to Venice Beach and beyond.

The modern resort boasts balconies that face the sand and surf. The bicycle rental shop is just steps outside the resort, where you’ll find beach cruisers in bright colors with baskets to carry a lunch or your beach towel and sunscreen.

The Source restaurant to enjoy after a bike ride

The Source Cafe

Pick up your bike and ride into town for coffee and healthy morning nibbles at The Source Cafe. If you start your journey later, take yourself to Tower 12 for lunch. The coastal towns of southern California are made for bicycling.

Omni Amelia Island luxury resort activities

Omni Amelia Island Plantation

With more than 1,300 beautiful acres to explore, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort on Amelia Island in the northeastern corner of Florida is a wonderland for bike riding families. At Amelia’s Wheels, you can rent cruisers for adults and kids, including a tag-a-long and baby trailers.

Seven miles of bicycle trails will take you under live oak canopies and over raised wooden bridges to some of Amelia Island Plantation’s points of interest, such as Aury Island, Drummond Point Park and Walker’s Landing.

Jekyll Island Club Hotel luxury resort activities

Jekyll Island Club Hotel

Located on a barrier island off Georgia’s coast, the historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel was once an exclusive members-only club for millionaires like Rockefeller and Astor. Today it’s a family-friendly resort with many activities for families.

You can explore the resort on wide bike ride paths lined with Spanish moss-covered oaks or venture further on the island’s 20 miles of bike paths, including routes that zig through a lush maritime forest, zag through the National Landmark Historic District and wind along beachscapes.

bike tours at the Enchantment resort Sedona

Enchantment Resort

Sedona’s premier ride-in, ride-out resort for mountain biking, hiking, and outdoor adventure, recently debuted its new adventure center Trail House. Designed by Gluckman Tang Architects, Trail House at Enchantment Resort is an epicenter for outdoor adventure and serves as the gathering point for resort guests interested in exploring the nearly 400 miles of trails and red rock vistas of Sedona.

Expert guides outfit guests and lead them on a wide variety of mountain bike ride excursions for all levels. With a previously existing path running directly through the building, Trail House acts as both a destination and a point of interest along the trail.

The Map Room is a space that features a 12-foot video wall, a 3D topographic map table and a wall map that highlights more than 50 trails to explore nearby.

The resort's biggest draw is its location facing the waterfront and the "bicycle highway."

Mission Point luxury resort activities and biking

Mission Point

Mission Point, an award-winning lakefront resort on Makinac Island, is a 10-minute walk from the Star Line Ferry dock. Mission Point has some history, using buildings that once held an 1820s Indian school and a 1950s Moral Re-Armament Conference Center.

The resort’s biggest draw is its location facing the waterfront and the “bicycle highway,” known as M-185 or Lake Shore Boulevard, it wraps 8.2 miles around the entire island. It is mostly flatt, with only a few hills. Bike riding will take you about an hour, but we suggest you stop and take in the sites of the Mackinac Bridge, enjoy the Native American Cultural History Trail information panels and a stop at British Landing.

bike ride tours at the Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff

The luxurious Montage Palmetto Bluff, a Montage Resort in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, is the perfect setting for two-wheel fun. Bike miles of trails shaded by oak trees covered in Spanish Moss. Take advantage of the resort’s complimentary beach bikes and you might spy wild boar, deer, armadillos and even bobcats scampering through the forest. Or watch the sunset on the May River coastline as dolphins frolic and local shrimp boats haul in the day’s catch.

Check out the Veuve Cliquot Picnic + Pedal, where you can pedal the days away in the low country of Palmetto Bluff. Venture out with a bottle of the finest Veuve Clicquot bubbly and a picnic of your choice to explore on the Signature Veuve Clicquot tour bike. The best trails are mapped for you, with picture-perfect settings to spread out your blanket and enjoy the view.

Examples of routes include a 32-mile bike tour up Figueroa Mountain Road that climbs to an elevation of 3,200 feet overlooking vineyards and ranches—the same route a few world-renowned cyclists have taken while doing Tour de France training. Or the route of one of the Amgen Tour’s time trials—a 13-mile loop with stunning rolling hills and a lake along the way.

Bike rentals are available through the resort, as are guided cycling tours. The Alisal also offers cyclists packed lunches from their renowned culinary program.
