Sustainable Interior Design | K & Q Interiors on the Net Zero ICONIC Home

Net Zero

What’s the key to sustainable interior design? K & Q share their perspective from designing the Net Zero ICONIC Home.

Kacie Lilley and Stacy Scharf are the successful lead interior designers behind Scottsdale-based K & Q Interiors, a full service, residential interior design company. When invited to participate in the sustainable interior design of the Net Zero ICONIC Home project, they jumped at the chance to demonstrate that beautiful design and sustainability are more than compatible.

From new construction to remodels to space planning to furniture and lighting selections, K & Q services each of their projects with attention to detail and an intuitive understanding of end result aspirations. For the Net Zero ICONIC Home project, in which elegance, energy-efficiency and sustainability combine, K & Q called upon their deep network of vendors to source items and products that validated the theme. The K & Q team spoke with ICONIC LIFE about their involvement:

How and why did you come to participate in the Net Zero ICONIC Home project?

We were actually approached very early on in the design phase of this home by the builder of the project, A Finer Touch Construction, who then introduced us to the homeowners.

Are energy efficiency and beautiful and comfortable interior design compatible?

We aim to achieve beautiful, functional and environmentally-friendly interiors. We feel it is essential to reduce the negative impacts of the environment, create a space with remarkable energy performance due to the total construction of the home, all without compromising the overall design aesthetic of the interior.

What existing aspects of the home provided influence and inspiration to you in your design?

The inspiring views of the desert landscape. Our goal was to capitalize on the beautiful views, and allow as much natural daylight as possible, but minimize the amount of direct light coming into the home. We worked with a clean and simple materials palette that did not distract from the views beyond.

Describe some specifics of your Net Zero ICONIC Home contributions.

We worked hand-in-hand with the homeowners in the selection of finish materials, provided design drawings for all areas of the home, worked closely with various vendors on plumbing fixtures, appliances, cabinetry, lighting selections, furnishings and décor.

What does it mean to you and your firm to take part in a project like this?

It was an honor to create an interior design aesthetic where we aimed to make a difference in the negative impact on our planet.

What is the significance of a project like the Net Zero ICONIC Home?

The concept of sustainable design may very well be a way of life in the future, so being able to provide this service and create an awareness to protect our environment, is an important aspect of the design services that we hope to one day provide for our clients.
