Set along the north shore of Lake Minnetonka, Wayzata has long been one of Minnesota’s most desirable places to live, thanks to its lake access, great schools, and a charming dining and design district. For a husband and wife considering where to build a new home, a nearby neighborhood met all the needs of their young family.
After selecting the lot, the couple worked with O’Hara Interiors to design a 15,500-square foot residence that is grand in scale yet feels warm and welcoming. The design firm, which has a studio in nearby Minneapolis, as well as in Austin and Dallas, Texas, is well known for designing classically beautiful spaces tailored to their clients’ lives and style.
O’Hara Interiors has worked extensively around the Lake Minnetonka area, but this design project was unique for its expansive footprint. Ample square footage presented the design team with opportunities to dream big and create several intentional spaces for family time, wellness, and rest.
From the entry, the home opens into its central gathering spaces: the great room and kitchen. The open layout encourages an easy flow between the lounge area, dining nook, and kitchen, while overhead, continuous wood beams add warmth and texture, unifying the entire space.
In the great room, a floor-to-ceiling quartzite fireplace wall has subtle variations in gray and black veining, contrasting the surrounding white oak floors and beams. On the opposite wall in the kitchen, a full-height backsplash in the same stone mirrors the fireplace.

The kitchen was designed to serve both everyday meals and larger gatherings, with a long, linear footprint that accommodates two distinct islands. One is dedicated to prep and cleanup, complete with an oversized sink and convenient access to double ovens, while the other provides seating for casual dining and conversation. Integrated paneled refrigeration keeps the look streamlined, and a hidden prep pantry offers additional storage and workspace to keep small appliances out of sight. A built-in dining nook, accented by a rattan-wrapped pendant, creates a more intimate spot within the expansive main floor.
Upstairs, the primary suite is designed as a couple’s retreat, with a tray-vault ceiling, built-in storage, and a quiet lounge area encased by windows that lead onto the private deck. The adjoining bathroom features a soft gray palette with an elongated vanity, soaking tub, and a steam shower.

The upper level also includes secondary bedrooms and a study nook, each designed with attention to scale, flow and natural light. The entertainment room was designed for family fun, with multiple zones staged for ways to relax and connect. A ping pong table and cards table bring a playful, interactive energy, while a lounge area with a large TV creates the perfect spot for casual viewing. Along the couch, a 12-foot viewing bar provides additional seating, making it easy to host everything from family game nights to big sporting events.
The lower level includes a full sport court for year-round play, a fitness studio suited to both strength training and yoga, and spa-style amenities such as a steam room and sauna. Together, these spaces extend the home’s focus on wellness and recreation, ensuring the home can serve the physical and emotional needs of the whole family.
