As luxury homes become increasingly sophisticated, homeowners and architects are demanding more from their living spaces. Larger expanses of glass, seamless indoor-outdoor connections, and effortless automation are no longer aspirational; they’re expected. Meeting those expectations requires more than technology. It requires continuous innovation.
For Summit Automation, innovation begins with listening.
“We’re customer-centric and focus our Advanced Product Development process around being a solutions provider,” says PJ Gruetzmacher, CEO of Summit Automation. “When you add the willingness to try, it builds a culture of leading innovation without fear of failure. There are no failures, just opportunities for improvements.”
That philosophy has positioned Summit as a leader in automated window and door systems, developing solutions that many companies either cannot provide or cannot deliver with the same level of sophistication and seamless performance.
As architectural trends continue pushing the boundaries of design, Summit evolves alongside them. Larger windows and doors have transformed luxury homes, creating dramatic views and stronger connections to the outdoors. Yet these impressive glass systems also present new challenges due to their size and weight. “Architects, designers, builders, and homeowners no longer need to worry about size or how to move them,” Gruetzmacher explains. “All they need to do is press a button or talk to the doors through our voice command module and let the motors do the work.”
One of Summit’s most groundbreaking innovations is its Vertical Lift technology. While pocketing doors revolutionized architecture by allowing panels to disappear into walls, Summit has taken that concept a step further. “When pocketing multi-slides came out to ‘hide’ the panels in the wall, that was an incredible breakthrough 25 years ago,” says Gruetzmacher. “Now the ability to hide panels vertically is the game changer today.”
By concealing motors within architectural frames whenever possible, Summit helps preserve the clean sightlines architects value while creating new design possibilities. In one memorable project, a homeowner in Asheville, North Carolina, designed her entire home around a custom automated window that rises into the attic.

The company’s commitment to innovation extends beyond dramatic architectural features. Summit continuously refines the technology behind the scenes to ensure systems operate smoothly, quietly, and reliably. When developing its Awning and Tilt-Up automation systems, engineers faced the challenge that no two actuators move at exactly the same speed.
“Our software and electrical engineers were put to task to develop a dual synchronization software which, by the naked eye, is undetectable,” says Gruetzmacher.
The result is a seamless user experience that feels effortless.
“The user shouldn’t even think about the motor or even touching the door,” he says. “Think about opening a bottle of wine and just let the motor handle the door.”
Looking ahead, Summit continues to develop new solutions based on how homeowners want to live. From voice commands and biometric controls to upcoming facial-recognition technology, the company remains focused on creating smarter, more intuitive experiences. “We are developing variable speed technology to provide a perfect open and close of a massive heavy panel in a very compressed space,” Gruetzmacher says of one of Summit’s latest projects.
For Summit Automation, innovation isn’t a destination. It’s an ongoing commitment to turning ambitious ideas into elegant realities, one breakthrough at a time.
