Hotel Saint Augustine | A Retreat in the Buzzing City

Quiet Luxury in Houston Finds a Home at Hotel Saint Augustine

After a little more than three hours on the road from Corpus Christi, I followed Google Maps toward Hotel Saint Augustine, trusting it would lead me through a city I barely knew. As the route wound through the quiet, trendy Montrose Neighborhood, I noticed the lovely patios where people sat, enjoying their lunch under the perfect, cloudless Houston day.

Arriving at Hotel Saint Augustine

I stopped at the valet stand, protected by an enormous blue-and-white umbrella. After a quick check-in, I was escorted to my room, which felt almost ceremonial, as though I were being welcomed into a private retreat rather than shown hotel accommodation.

My room included a private balcony overlooking the courtyard, with a view of the restaurant Perseid, where Chef Aaron Bludorn’s cuisine is elegantly served at long, white-linen-draped tables adorned with fresh flowers. Further down the courtyard, the round pool awaited guests.

Expanses of green drapery lined the walls of my room, not simply framing windows but acting as a layered design feature that gave the room softness and intimacy. The spa-like bathroom reminded one of Old Hollywood – Elegant and feeling like a place you would like to linger.

At Hotel Saint Augustine, the room carried a quiet elegance, layered with rich textures, thoughtful lighting, and a residential warmth that made it feel immediately personal. With no television, it would have been easy to give up plans and curl up with my book for the room’s cocoon-like warmth.

Exploring the Neighborhood

With comfortable shoes on, I headed out to walk in the neighborhood. Directly across the walkway from the hotel to Menil Park, a 30-acre campus. An expansive area with beautiful oak trees, spreading their branches and leaves, filtering the Houston sunlight. People were lying on blankets, having quiet conversations, while other areas were alive with children playing tag.

There are five separate buildings related to the Menil Collection. All the building admissions are free and open to the public. The goal of the collection is to make it open and fully accessible for everyone. I wandered into the Menil Drawing Institute and was fascinated to see sketches and completed immense drawings adorning the galleries.

With Rothko being one of my favorite artists, I headed to the Rothko Chapel located on the campus. This small chapel was built specifically to house Rotko’s paintings. I entered, and inside were benches, and the entire area was surrounded by Rotko paintings.

At first, the paintings seem black, but as light settles and the eye adjusts, deep maroons and muted purples begin to emerge. That’s very much part of the Rothko experience. It’s a place for quiet meditation with treasured art.

Cocktail Time

Wandering into the main area reveals not only a relaxed business center but also a cocktail lounge that feels elegant without being stuffy. The bartender, like all the other members of this staff, was delightful and happily prepared my Old Fashioned to my preferred specifications.

The Hotel Augustine is part of the Hyatt Hotel Corporation under the Bunkhouse Hotel Brand. In a large city like Houston, the hotel’s block-like building architecture creates a retreat-like space, making the stay feel both intimate and engaged, given its positioning in the neighborhood.

What lingers most, however, is the atmosphere: understated elegance, a sense of calm, and a team whose thoughtful presence makes every interaction feel personal.
