Amid the calm of a quiet Los Angeles street resides an architectural marvel—a home that marries contemporary elegance with artisanal warmth. Designed by Kim Gordon, this Amalfi retreat is a sanctuary of curves, textures and thoughtful details, conceived during an era of global uncertainty yet imbued with boundless creativity: the COVID-19 era.

INSPIRATION BORN FROM RESILIENCE
A visionary designer known for her ability to blend bold architecture with intimate, soulful interiors, designer Kim Gordon has always had a deep appreciation for natural materials and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Built during the challenges of the pandemic, she made adaptability and ingenuity her guides, ultimately turning challenges into some of her greatest triumphs with this home.

Bedroom

“Not able to get anything from big companies, we went local and found makers, which created a lovely handmade quality,” she explains.

This unexpected pivot toward smaller craftsmen resulted in a home with soul. A space where every detail feels personal and intentional.

Inspired by trips to the resorts of Mexico and a nod to the brutalist aesthetic, Gordon softened bold structural elements with curves, warm hues and a textural richness that envelopes each room.

But the favorite in all her designs? “I can’t choose between the kitchen and the main bedroom,” she told us. You’ll soon see why.

Living Room

A CULINARY HAVEN
At the heart of the home lies the kitchen, a striking blend of modernity and natural warmth. A spacious marble island anchors the room, while royal blue bar seats provide a vibrant pop of color. Dark and light natural wood elements contrast beautifully, with built-in bar shelves offering a seamless balance of style and function.

“The kitchen concept has a bit of a bar vibe,” Gordon notes. “Facing the living areas and connecting to a rear portion with a spiral staircase leading to a rooftop garden for herbs and veggies.”

A SANCTUARY WITHIN: THE BEDROOM WING
The bedroom wing of the home unfolds as if it’s a private retreat, offering a much-needed sanctuary for rest and relaxation after a busy day in the city.

“There are two wonderful separate rooms for the parents, a little espresso bar and a massive closet,” Gordon explains.

One of these rooms was later converted into a nursery, reflecting the home’s thoughtful adaptability. In case that wasn’t private retreat vibes enough, the home is complete with a jacuzzi that extends the living space into the natural landscape, emphasizing that seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle of Los Angeles.

CRAFTING WELLNESS: COLOR PALETTES ROOTED IN NATURE
Throughout the home, you’ll find a soft and warm color palette. This is an intentional, brilliant design choice that brings a sense of tranquility, drawing inspiration from the natural world. From the clay-finished walls to the handcrafted dimensional accents, the textures and tones evoke the sunlit serenity of a coastal retreat.

“This was the largest home that we in our office have worked on to date,” Gordon reflects, describing the project as a departure from the narrow lots she previously navigated in Venice. With this newfound freedom, she created not just a home but a wellness retreat.

“It gave us an opportunity to think outside of the box and create a space that is both elegant and cozy,” she adds.

The design also speaks to modern priorities, blending luxury with sustainability and functionality. Multipurpose rooms cater to evolving needs, while the rooftop garden and the use of natural materials celebrate a harmonious connection with the environment.

Driveway

A SPACE OF PERSONAL TRIUMPH
This home reflects more than one great accomplishment of Gordon’s. In fact, the project took on an even deeper meaning for Gordon as she faced a personal cancer diagnosis during its creation.

“It became very personal,” she admits. “The love and attention to detail became a distraction from the world around me.”

The result is not only beautiful in design but was crafted with resilience and heart—a reflection of the designer’s journey as much as its architectural vision.

For Gordon, this Amalfi retreat represents a pivotal moment in her career, blending large-scale ambition with intimate artistry.

Lounge Room

“It’s ICONIC to me because it allowed us to create a home that feels like a sanctuary,” she says.
From the curved lines of the architecture to the clay walls, the home transcends its purpose as a residence—an embodiment of purpose, beauty and adaptability.
