Settled within the Hollywood Hills is a recently renovated home that seamlessly melds the home’s original character with a modern, edgy ambiance. The black wood and red brick combination of the exterior gives a feeling of mystery, while the interior welcomes warmth.
The project was spearheaded by Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn, principal designers of House of Rolison. Both Leigh and Hahn wanted to salvage the home’s unique 1930s characteristics while adding modern touches. The result is a New England-style home that radiates with character and originality.
“We had been dying to do a New England-style home,” Leigh says. “When we bought the home, it was pretty neglected, but the bones were incredible.”
The unique lot allowed the home to have many luxuries that most homes in the Hollywood Hills don’t have. “The home had all of the major things that people need: an area for a grass yard, a pool, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, which was perfect because in this part of the Hollywood Hills, the land is not flat and generally people have to sacrifice something, but this home had everything and checked all the boxes,” Leigh explains.

The interiors are equally as intriguing as the exterior. A dark blue living room encloses the space, giving it a cozy, intimate feeling. The large plush furniture and neutral palette continue that feeling of invitation, allowing the homeowners to treat it as a space to unwind and let chaos dissipate.
“We chose the dark blue to complement and highlight the original Delft tiles around the fireplace,” Hahn says, noting that when she painted the room a lighter color, something felt like it was missing. “The lighter color blended the tiles in; instead, we did a really heavy contrast with the darker color, which created a really cozy ambiance.”
Many original aspects of the home were restored during the renovation process, such as the Delft tiles that line the fireplace and stained-glass door in the dining room, unexpected elements that embellish the home and add to its overall charm.
Apart from the statement living room, the rest of the home exudes a light, airy feeling. Large arch-paned windows invite light to flood the home while curved furniture adds fluidity and continuity from room to room.

This home is a testament to the beauty that can come from the amalgamation of New England and coastal aesthetics. The juxtaposition of light and dark gives this home an edge and makes for a truly unique addition to the Hollywood Hills neighborhoods.
