Our Publisher shares how some gifts are more than just a gift; they can create a greater impact—for the giver, the receiver and maybe the larger world.
John Lewis & Partners, a chain of high-end department stores throughout Great Britain released its annual Christmas television advert, part of an annual tradition that began in 2007, with tens of millions of views each year around the globe. The commercial has been concepted by Adam & Eve/DDB since 2009, and it has signaled the countdown to Christmas and attracts widespread media coverage and viral sharing on social media.

Two years ago, “A Boy and His Piano” had me in tears with goosebumps as you see a young Elton John receive a piano as a gift from his adoring mom in a modest home outside London. You see the joy on the mother’s face to hear her amazing son play his new piano, and the boy embraces the instrument for family events and school concerts…and then we know what happened next. The commercial chronicles his life at the keyboards of countless pianos and reminds us of the gift of music that we’ve all received from this great talent, and the gift that music is to him.

This year, John Lewis is at it again with another touching advert, believing that the world would be a better place if we all gave a little more love. “So, this year we’re celebrating kindness, whether large or small, showing how each and every act of love has a positive impact on the world around us, as we pass them on to others,” says John Lewis & Partners.
“Of all the things to be, I choose kindness and if you gave some to me, I think we’d find ourselves dancing in the street. Everyone we’d meet would smile a little daydream; it could be amazing. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everybody gave a little love.” – Songwriter Celeste
Yes, I am a hopeless romantic about the holidays, and these touching moments remind me of the spirit we can embrace every day of the year.
And wouldn’t that be a gift that keeps on giving, inspired by the greatest gift we’ve ever received.
Wishing you a beautiful holiday season and a Merry Christmas!
With Gratitude,
