Restaurants today are all about “farm-to-table,” and now the same concept applies to beauty products.
More natural beauty brands are embracing locally grown organic ingredients, and some brands take it a step further by owning their own farms. Why farm-to-face? One reason is that it’s part of the wider trend of having a more mindful approach to living, which ties in with conscious consumption. Consumers are demanding more transparency from their brands. They not only want to know what effect the ingredients will have on their skin, but where these ingredients come from and how they are sourced as well, and the best natural beauty and natural makeup brands are coming to the table with transparency.
Farm-to-face offers plenty of advantages for the natural beauty brands as well. “This includes minimizing their carbon footprint and being allowed the opportunity to ensure that environmentally sustainable business practices are actually used. Which, in turn, benefit all consumers and future generations,” says Andrea Barone, founder of Crystal Hills, a healing skincare line that farms their own botanicals in Canada. The product line includes bath salts packed with green tea, calendula and soothing comfrey.
When companies embrace farm-to-face they can control exactly what goes into their products, and ensure that only the freshest and most potent ingredients are used in formulations. “I think many companies are choosing to farm their own ingredients, as it provides the opportunity to monitor growing conditions—thereby resulting in harvesting the freshest and healthiest plants,” says Barone.
The plants are harvested at a peak time, and products are made in small batches to maximize potency.
Oftentimes the plants are harvested at a peak time, and products are made in small batches to maximize potency. Many farm-to-face products include a batch number or “made on” stamp to ensure freshness—just as you’d see in a supermarket.
Just dipping your toes into this trend? Here’s a look at some of our favorite farm-to-face natural beauty brands.

Plums are a superfood, and naturally high in vitamins A & E and omega fatty acids. The oil absorbs quickly into the skin and is suitable for all skin types. It can also be used on hair and nails.
German brand Dr. Hauschka has been promoting organic makeup and sustainable, natural beauty for more than 50 years. Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream is a perennial favorite, and one of the newest products is Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Day Cream Complexion, which harnesses the power of red clover and field horsetail to revitalize skin, while avocado and olive plant oils add a moisture boost.
