Elevated Style With London Pierce Design

In the foothills of Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountains, interior designer Candice Quinn creates a cool, polished setting for a new home.

In North Scottsdale, Tom’s Thumb is a granite landmark, a knobby outcropping atop the McDowell Mountains popular with rock climbers and hikers. Nearby, a new home by interior designer Candice Quinn, founder of London Pierce Design, frames views of the mountains and landmarks, but serves a sleek counterpoint to the rugged desert terrain.

“The owners of this home found me through Instagram,” says Quinn. “They said that they liked what I like and trusted me and my team to create their dream home.”

The dream home for the couple, who split their time between Scottsdale and Chicago, is a contemporary residence in a new community created by builder Camelot Homes. The home and guest casita wrap around a central courtyard anchored by a black-tiled swimming pool, linking almost every room to the outdoors.

“We came in early in the building process,” says Quinn. “While most of the surfaces and cabinetry were already chosen, we were able to add some finishes and built-in cabinetry for the home office.”

Taking her cues from the owners’ inspiration photos and the wife’s love of fun chairs, Quinn worked with a tone-on-tone neutral palette of white, cream and gray, with accents of black, gold and brass for drama, playing off the home’s existing pale tile flooring, white walls and white lacquered kitchen cabinetry.

“I brought in a lot of texture through the furniture and accessories we sourced from my showroom,” Quinn explains. “It keeps all the white from feeling sterile and cold.”

In the entry—which has a dead-on view of Tom’s Thumb—a round marble table repeats the circular form of the jagged crystal light pendant hanging above. Quinn framed the space by layering walls with ribbed white oak for warmth and hung complementary black and white abstract artworks on opposite sides.

In the great room, a custom sectional upholstered in cool white linen angles around the fireplace and TV wall. Nearby, the ebonized wood dining table is encircled by a flock of curvaceous dining chairs, upholstered in a white velveteen fabric. The curving kitchen barstools are also white, with black and brass accents. “The owners don’t have small children or pets, so white seating could be used,” says Quinn. “The secret is using performance fabrics for easy cleaning.”

A performance fabric in the form of camel-hued velveteen was also chosen for the lounge seating, where back-to-back sofas allow the owners and guests to either watch TV on one side of the room or enjoy cocktails from the bar on the other.

In the primary bedroom, Holly Hunt fabric draperies soften the setting, as does a ribbed upholstered headboard. “We didn’t want to clutter up the bedroom with a lot of furniture because there are great views of the courtyard,” Quinn says. “But we had fun with curved shapes for the settee, bench and dresser.” For the powder room, Quinn added more depth to the dark, herringbone-patterned tile wall above the vanity by cladding other walls in a textured black wallpaper.

With all rooms opening up to the courtyard or other patios around the house, Quinn was careful in choosing contemporary outdoor furniture to complement the look of the interior. “The living spaces really extend outside,” she says. The designer also chose accessories for the setting, curating pieces on shelves and in the kitchen’s glass cabinetry, picking items with colors and shapes that complement the interior’s luxe, elevated ambiance. She also commissioned Arizona artist Natalie Sichko to create two minimalist black and white paintings for the great room. As a final touch, Quinn hired a photographer to scramble up the trail to Tom’s Thumb to take a black and white picture of the ICONIC landmark, which she blew up to a large image, hanging it in a hallway as an artistic focal point. “I like adding a fun story to the interior,” she says. “This really connects it to its site.”
