Mummy Mountain

A historic landmark in Arizona, the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa has played host to many celebrities throughout the years.

The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa has a long history of attracting notable travelers since they opened their doors in 1936—including Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Bette Davis and the Marriott family.

While the property has changed significantly since the 1930s, the appeal of the resort was immediately clear when I arrived for my one-night stay—the property is surrounded by a pristine desert landscape complete with plenty of saguaro cactus, and stunning views of Camelback and Mummy Mountain.

When the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa was originally built in the 1930s, it was designed by architect Edward Loomis Bowes and made to accommodate 75 guests. Today, after a $12.5 million dollar transformation, the resort was re-imagined with 453 casitas and suites and a welcoming lobby, plus excellent dining options.

I stayed the night in one of the newly renovated casitas with my husband, which was decorated with colors and patterns that are reminiscent of the desert—weathered woods, crackled earth textures and bronze accents. The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa casita was complete with new furniture, including a comfortable bed and a spacious couch. Large french doors led to a sun-deck patio with chairs, ideal for morning coffee drinking while daydreaming in the desert.

After unwinding in the casita and exploring the resort grounds, it was time for dinner at Lincoln Steakhouse & Bar. I opted for the tasty lobster risotto and a signature cocktail, while my husband enjoyed a tender ribeye steak. We also shared a delicious plate of truffle fries. San Francisco-native Chef John Fraser stopped by to talk to us, and we gave him our thumbs up for the excellent food—especially the desert, which was a delicious crème brûlée.

The next morning for breakfast, we tried the other restaurant on the grounds of the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, Rita’s Cantina & Bar. They offered a curated menu of breakfast choices or a buffet, and we chose the buffet to get a sampling of a little bit of everything. From pancakes to omelets, fresh fruit and muffins, they had a wide selection of breakfast foods to pick from, and none of them disappointed.
