Why not indulge this enforced nesting time to flatten the curve to get organized at home?

The kids are at home; your partner is at home, and as much as you’d like to leave for the spa or even a quiet day at the office, YOU are at home. During these days of “nesting at home” to flatten the curve, you have more to do and less to do at the same time—you could be cooking or educating, but you are certainly not commuting or meeting with others. So, why not enjoy the guilty pleasure of quiet, solo time and get organized at home?

Ashley Stewart, founded of OCD AZ: Organize, Design, Create, designed the butler’s pantry for ICONIC HAUS 2020, is a professional organizer with an impressive six-digit insta following. Check out her work on video or the other designers whose work is available on our VIRTUAL ICONIC HAUS. We asked her to share her DIY tips for the best way to stay organized at home to create peace in the pantry and beyond.

For easy organizing, Stewart says every space in your home starts the same way—take everything out of the space and assess what you have. Then follow her room-by-room narrative in her own words for creating order from chaos. Plus, for room-organizing accessories, Stewart turns to The Container Store for what she needs. If you want to the best way to stay organized at home, first you are going to need to take EVERYTHING out! I know…it is going to take some time, but it is very important to do so you can see all of your items better. Create categories and group the items together as you take them out:
Pasta-Rice-Snacks-Healthy Snacks-Cans-Jars-Baking items-Oils/Vinegars-Cereal/breakfast items-Chips-Crackers-Appliances-Backstock

Then start putting what you want to keep in baskets for bulk items and label the baskets. Use steps (usually plastic step pieces) and turntables for glass jars such as oils, vinegars and sauces.

CLOSET
First thing, TAKE EVERYTHING OUT to get organized at home. You will want to group your clothes together when you install so it is necessary to take out so you can see everything. This is also a good opportunity for you to see what you have and edit your collection. And, if there are pieces you are ready to donate or consign, do that now.

Organize by color using ROYGBIV:
White-Cream-Pink-Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet-Brown-Grey-Black

On the right side of your closet, make it look like you have two racks (top and bottom):
Tank casual-Tank dressy-Short sleeve casual-Short sleeve dressy-Dress shirt-Long sleeve casual-Sweatshirts-Sweaters-Jackets

Then use baskets on the top of this shelf for your accessory items including:
Handbags-Clutches-Scarves/Beanies-Hats

Choose baskets that fit the shelving you have and label each basket for each category including:
Backstock-Skincare-Sunscreen/Beach/Pool-Soaps-Feminine Products-Travel

Of my best ways to stay organized at home, I suggest storing your medicines and remedies in clear bins. Separate the items by groups as follows:
Kids Meds-First Aid—bandages, ointments-Cold and Flu-Vitamins/General Meds

I like to use a white oil-based sharpie to label these bins, or you can use adhesive labels, if you use the white plastic baskets.

Do you work with greater focus on your business when you have a professional coach? The same elevated results can be achieved when you hire a professional organizer to get organized at home for these reasons:

— Handholding through the editing/purging process; keeps you moving.

— No emotional attachment to your items; can go through them without bias.

— On the clock; a professional won’t get distracted by items like a box of photos.

— Trained to use time efficiently; holds you accountable.

— Tested solutions: They know what products work the best to get the job done; saves money and time.

— Experienced advice: A professional has a plan and a system to get the job done.

— FUN! Like any professional service, hire someone you like to make the process fun.
