THE HOTEL MARQUES DE RISCAL – Araba, Spain
Modern meets vintage at another one of the best vineyard hotels, the Hotel Marqués de Riscal. Iconic modern architect Frank Gehry designed this hotel that features striking architecture—with pieces of colorful twisted “ribbons” of metal adorning the roof—and is in Spain’s famed Rioja wine region. The hotel is located in Araba, nicknamed “The City of Wine” and is also home to one of Rioja’s oldest wineries, the Herederos del Marqués de Riscal. The winery dates back to 1858 and is known for its innovative and pioneering winemaking techniques. One notable blend is the Frank Gehry Selection 2012, an award-winning 100-percent Tempranillo that’s aged 30 months in French oak barrels.

And it’s not just the wines on this list of vineyard hotels that have taken home top honors. The on-site Restaurante Marqués de Riscal is a Michelin-starred restaurant with sweeping vistas of the nearby medieval town of Elciego that serves traditional regional Basque cuisine paired with complimentary wines. Guests choose from two tasting menus that include dishes like traditional tapas, including Riojan Potatoes and croquettes.

In keeping with the wine vineyard theme, hotel guests also can book treatments like the Merlot Wrap or the Crushed Cabernet Scrub at the Spa Vinotherapie Marqués de Riscal.

The exterior of the property gives way to modern rooms designed by Frank Gehry. Some come complete with slanted floor-to-ceiling windows or ceilings, depending on what wing you book. All rooms feature stunning views of the vineyards, the hotel, Elciego, or the nearby mountains.
