Like cozying up in a soft, toasty blanket on a chilly night, drinking an aromatic steaming cup of coffee is one of life’s most rewarding comforts.
In fact, people consume more than two billion cups of java around the world each day, according to PBS. Whether you’re a fan of plain black coffee, espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, or another type of delicious brew, you might not be able to start your day without a jolt of caffeine-infused coffee. Fun fact: famed French philosopher and writer Voltaire was rumored to have consumed 40 to 50 cups of joe a day!
To celebrate the beverage, we’ve rounded up some of the best, most luxurious gourmet coffee shops in the U.S.
Daylight Mind Coffee Company – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Besides a few farms in California, Hawaii is the only state in the United States that produces speciality coffee. In this beautiful paradise, many coffees labeled as Kona consist of only a tiny percentage of local beans. However, the Daylight Mind Coffee Company, located in stunning Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, uses 100-percent Kona beans in its Sweet Waves espresso. This scrumptious brew will likely taste even better if you sip it while sitting on the balcony of this waterside establishment. Of course, Daylight Mind’s coffee roastery pairs well with any of the eatery’s brunch offerings, such as Niu Pancakes featuring a Big Island coconut, three pancakes, and haupia syrup.
The Black Bear – Denali National Park, Alaska
Situated just outside the entrance to Alaska’s breathtakingly beautiful Denali National Park, The Black Bear is only open during tourist season. For those four months, however, this pressed cafe brews some of the best java imaginable. The business is staffed by baristas brought in from around the country, and beans are brewed from SteamDot Coffee in Anchorage. In addition to hot coffee roastery, there are also cold concoctions including mint chip, Oreo, funky monkey espresso shakes and blended iced speciality coffee options. Those who wish to stay a while and gaze at the majestic mountain views can munch on savory fare like pulled pork sandwiches and smoked-Gouda macaroni and cheese.
Devocion Café – Brooklyn, New York
New Yorkers reportedly drink seven times more coffee than anyone else in the United States. With so many devoted fans, the region is a bastion of notable gourmet, speciality coffee shops. Perhaps none is more impressive than Devocion Café in Brooklyn. This establishment’s coffee beans are sourced from hand-selected farms in Colombia and dry-milled in Bogota before being shipped to the United States for roasting. Devocion Café is housed in a former warehouse dating back to the time the neighborhood was a working waterfront district. Reclaimed wood, bare brick, and steel beams of the original structure wow customers as they indulge in specialty coffees such as Toro with notes of cacao, vanilla, cherry, and almond; or El Sol, consisting of notes of peach, caramel and cinnamon which is why this place makes our list as one of the best coffee shops in the U.S.
Press Coffee Roasters – Scottsdale, Arizona
If you’re a coffee drinker who’s a fan of nostalgia, Press Coffee Roasters in Scottsdale is the place for you. The inviting pressed cafe shop is crafted with reclaimed wood deriving from the home of the person who invented the icebox. In 2008, Press Coffee Roasters hosted Arizona’s very first latte art throwdowns. During balmy Arizona summers, patrons flock to this luxury coffee shop in order to cool off with its signature cold brew. The business also prides itself on its hot beverage offerings. Burgeoning java connoisseurs can hone their skills by taking the Coffee 101 course the business offers. In the class, you’ll learn the history of different types of coffee and how the journey from seed to cup creates the flavors you enjoy today.
Jackson Hole Roasters – Jackson, Wyoming
The coffee at Jackson Hole Roasters in Jackson is roasted old-school style without the use of any computers or automation, and is organic. Once roasted, the java is brewed on custom equipment the gourmet coffee shop’s owner, Stefan Grainda, specifically modified for the profile of his beverages. Grainda is a third-generation roaster from Slovakia who learned his craft in Europe before bringing it to America. While stopping in for coffee, you might want to sample some of Grainda’s delectable menu options including his house-made chia nut granola, poached pear salad, and ahi tuna sandwich.
Coffea Roasterie – Sioux Falls, South Dakota
In 2009, Coffea Roasterie opened its doors in Sioux Falls. The owners’ objective was to offer customers the best coffee around. To accomplish this task, they utilized a red Probat roaster to fire up batches of coffee from award-winning farms like Finca Idolia in Guatemala. For those craving sweets with their java, this gourmet coffee shop serves tantalizingly tasty maple oat, cranberry orange, butter pecan, sweet potato chocolate chip, and apple cinnamon walnut scones. You might also want to pair the Elio Latte, a concoction containing fresh peaches, bananas, brown sugar, and nutmeg, with Coffea Roasterie’s ginger molasses cookies.
