Life presents us with magical moments, like a hike with a view, and the perfect way to preserve them is with that perfect photo. These day’s we automatically reach for our smart phones and for many of us, they have replaced the conventional camera. However, manufacturers have turned on their creative juices to create a new crop of sophisticated cameras with additional technologies that surpass the capabilities of your phone. These winners on our best camera list also make it simple to shoot professional-looking images with a richness that goes beyond smart-phone cameras capabilities. If you really want that great shot, it’s time to take a look at photography through a new lens. Here are the options we’re loving now…and yes, I checked them out myself.
SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-RX100 VII
Sony has come out with the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII. It is a long-zoom compact camera which boasts a newly developed 20 Megapixel, 1″-type sensor. It has a flip-up touch screen and a cool pop up viewfinder. It also has a 24-200mm equivalent F2.8-4.5 lens. The Sony also shoots great video—as do most of the Sony camera’s I have used. This one has Full HD at up to 120 fps and lower resolution video, as well as a built-in microphone.
PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-FZ2500 DIGITAL CAMERA
I personally own the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500 Digital Camera. It is a point-and-shoot camera that has incredible mix of advanced photographic capabilities thanks to a 20.1MP 1″ High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and fantastic video specs which include DCI 4K format video at a true 24.00 fps. The Panasonic FZ2500 boasts a far-reaching 20x optical zoom, and a 24mm-equivalent wide angle. It’s a versatile camera, and it uses numerous specialized elements to guarantee sharp images and offers an outstanding 24-480mm equivalent zoom range. The camera is not super light, but it features a DSLR-like body design that is very ergonomic, including manual control rings, a 0.74x 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and a 3.0″ 1.04m-dot free-angle touch screen LCD.
I owned a Leica and used if for years until, much to my regret, it was stolen while I was traveling.
Leica D-Lux 7
LEICA D-LUX 7
Any camera that is designed and made by hand in Germany makes for a spectacular camera. I owned a Leica and used if for years until, much to my regret, it was stolen while I was traveling. People who own Leica cameras are serious about their craft. However, the best part is these cameras are easy to use and even the average photographer can take outstanding photos. The Leica D-Lux 7 is a great compact camera to use at home and while traveling.
It has a fixed lens, travel zoom and key features include a 17-megapixel resolution from a 21.77 megapixel four-thirds CMOS sensor. This is married to a lens with an equivalent reach of a wide angle 24-75mm in 35mm film terms. The maximum lens aperture is an extremely fast and bright f/1.7, with the ability to adjust this manually via a lens ring that offers incremental settings up to f/16. So, for the sophisticated photographer it presents great options, and for the casual one even better as you can just hit the automatic setting, which has its own button and one can easily create masterpieces.

Using a Leica camera is always a top pick for me, and this camera combines the classic elements of its heritage with modern technology. The phenomenal full-frame sensor produces images with an amazing amount of detail as well as the out of focus area. It’s great with low light and is perfect for street photography in the style of the classic, old-fashioned photographers. However, it has all the modern bell and whistles as one can transmit images, use the camera’s fast autofocus with face detect and make use of the stabilized lens. It is a light camera that produces phenomenal results. Also, it is a quiet camera that allows photographers to take photos without alerting the subjects, which often leads to more authentic photography.
