THE CLARENCE Dublin, Ireland
The Clarence. This excellent hotel is located on Dublin’s Quays, the historic main way in and out of the city, dates to the 1850s. Through most of its history, it was anything but luxury, attracting a strange mix of wild musicians and visiting clergy. In fact, The Clarence would barely register on anyone’s radar except for the fact that in 1992, iconic U2 band mates Bono and The Edge bought the tired property and transformed it into a chic boutique hotel fitting for a rock star.

One of the most beautiful hotels, The Clarence offers 50 rooms and suites, including a penthouse suite with a rooftop terrace. Michelin star chef Oliver Dunne helms the Cleaver East, a tasting-plate restaurant. Don’t miss the “Not Afternoon Tea.” Cucumber sandwiches are replaced with contemporary sweet and savory bites and a spirited cocktail menu.

The subterranean, Prohibition-style speakeasy bar, The Liquor Room, is the only Irish bar to ever be nominated in the “Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.”

Because of the hotel’s location in the very lively Temple Bar area, the hotel is not the right choice if you’re looking for a quiet getaway.

BEDFORD POST INN Bedford, New York
Just an hour out of New York City, but light years away in atmosphere and pace, lies the Bedford Post Inn. The charming countryside inn looks like it came directly from central casting, which is fitting since Richard Gere owns the Relais & Chateaux property. Gere, whose father grew up on a dairy farm, stumbled on the property while riding horses with his ex wife. The two fell in love with it, bought it and went to work restoring and renovating the 1762 stone farmhouse into a luxurious eight-room inn.
