We all spend a lot of time in our bathrooms—in fact, according to one UK study, the average person will spend a total of 416 days of their life in the bathroom. Whether you’re putting on your makeup, taking a long shower or shaving, your bathroom should be a sanctuary space that you can—and want to—escape to.
A sanctuary bathroom design is nothing new to Dallas-based Joseph A. Tsedaka, Principal at NOMI Bathroom Remodeling. Tsedaka’s award-winning firm is a nationally recognized luxury bathroom remodeler, and he recently completed eight new high-design bathroom remodel projects that embrace the spa-like sanctuary style.
We asked Tsedaka our burning questions about what it takes to complete a successful bathroom remodel, design trends and more!
ICONIC LIFE: What’s the biggest benefit of remodeling your bathroom?
Joseph A. Tsedaka: “The biggest benefit to remodeling would be improving your quality of life. Imagine yourself coming from work and getting into a hot steam shower that was just remodeled and spending much needed quality time. It will re-energize your body, soul and make you a better person for not only yourself, but also for your spouse and family.”
ICONIC LIFE: What are the most-frequent challenges that you face when completing a bathroom remodel?
Joseph A. Tsedaka: “The biggest challenge today is getting the materials in a timely manner due to current events, such as COVID-19 supply chain delays. However, luckily, since NOMI Bathroom Remodeling is a company that specializes only in the highest of bathroom remodeling, most vendors we partner with provide us the materials first compared to others, so it’s not as a frequent challenge.”

ICONIC LIFE: How do you convert a typical powder room into a sanctuary spa?
Joseph A. Tsedaka: “In two ways. One, it’s the quality of the plumbing fixtures and two, it’s the design. From a plumbing point of view, fixtures such as steam jets, free-standing tubs, TV systems, and technology that controls all the shower heads, which is the number one feature that makes a bathroom like a spa.
The second thing is the interior design, starting with the color palettes, finishes, sourcing unique tiles and vanities and beyond.”
ICONIC LIFE: What design trends are you seeing in bathrooms? What trends do you love, which ones do you hate?
Joseph A. Tsedaka: “A trend I like in bathroom design is incorporating technology into a shower that provides ease and relaxation for clients. As for trends to skip, people want opulent and “bling” features—while there’s a ton of options in that sector, the quality of materials isn’t up to the highest of standards, and those materials are not as lasting. It might look good on day one, but after a while, problems can arise after only a few months of daily use.”

ICONIC LIFE: What features are people looking for the most in their bathrooms?
Joseph A. Tsedaka: “Steam showers! They want to bring the luxury spa experience that they see in their vacations into their day-to-day lifestyle. At NOMI Bathroom Remodeling, we’ve been incorporating steam showers into 80 percent of our projects, so it’s a feature that people are requesting more.”
