Well-known for her column from 1965 to 1996, Erma Bombeck’s legacy continues to inspire at the annual Authors Luncheon.
The Authors Luncheon, hosted by the Arizona Women’s Board, is back with their annual event and mission to benefit Arizona kidney patients. Taking place on November 5 at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa, the 43rd Authors Luncheon pays tribute to the legacy of ICONIC writer and mother of three, Erma Bombeck.
“She had a quote, which was something like ‘live life to the fullest, remember all those women that waved off the dessert tray on the Titanic,’ so she had a very ‘live for the moment’ attitude and that is actually the way she lived.” Matt Bombeck, son of Erma, says.
“We, quite honestly, were oblivious to her success as a writer until we got older.”

Well-known for her syndicated columns and 15 books written between 1965 to 1996, Erma was a writer who embraced humor in life. Her columns were written from the perspective of being a mother and wife, with a witty and relatable flair.
“I don’t think she considered herself to be a comedian, I think she considered herself always to be a writer and a journalist, but she had a real gift for delivery,” Bombeck says.

The Authors Luncheon was created in homage to Erma, and continues to honor her and her fight against kidney disease.
“The Arizona Women’s Board, I think they have done such a phenomenal job over the years and it’s just such an exquisite event,” Bombeck says. “It’s become a lot more formal and the authors became a lot more prominent, and it really blossomed into what it is today, which is just a terrific event.”
Through this event, the Arizona Women’s Board drives awareness, education and research for improving the quality of life of those struggling with kidney disease. They achieve this by giving grants to organizations that provide patient services, like dialysis, kidney transplants and more.
This year’s Authors Luncheon will feature prominent writers like Adriana Trigiani, Chris Bohjalian, Geraldine Brooks, Jack Carr, Candice Millard and Daniel H. Pink.
