Situated on the white sandy beaches of Barbados is an estate that masterfully melds European style and flair with the relaxed and calming coastal ambiance the island possesses. Each room has its own personality through the eclectic accents displayed, creating a unique experience with each room you occupy.
The sprawling 32,000-square-foot, four-acre estate boasts 12 thoughtfully designed bedrooms over two properties as well as The Great House with a private gym, a cinema, formal dining spaces and a striking art deco bar. The home, known as Laughing Waters, can accommodate up to 25 guests on the property.
The clever selection of materials by London-based interior designer Emma Pearson perfectly reflects the Caribbean mansion feeling that the home’s architecture– with some of its design by the acclaimed architect Larry Warren– exudes while also staying true to the relaxed and carefree character of the island.
“I am very much a believer that a house should be a home,” Pearson says. “It should tell a story, and this client really likes antiques mixed with modern, everyday functionality. We wanted to give the home the feel that there were family heirlooms and eclectic items that you wouldn’t necessarily see in a house like this. The client didn’t want their home to have a particular look, and that was brilliant because it gave me a blank canvas to work with.”

Pastels and blues are popular colors utilized throughout the home’s furnishings, mimicking the colors of the vast ocean and sandy beach and fostering a connection between design and nature. Pearson was strongly influenced by different cultures for this project, implementing unique items such as renaissance-style paintings, opulent ceramics and sculptures, making the home stand out from the typical coastal-contemporary style that is often seen in beachfront properties.
Pearson’s personal favorite space on the estate is the great room. “I love this space because it’s in the middle of the property, surrounded by wonderful gardens,” she says. “ It has huge doors all the way around it, and it can be used for any purpose; it’s really just a magical space.”
Apart from the stunning state of the property itself, guests will also receive five-star service with full access to a luxury SUV and golf cart, perfect for navigating the sprawling property and nearby amenities; an unparalleled range of services from a dedicated team, including concierge, chef, butler, housekeepers, private security and exclusive access to the nearby AAA Five Diamond resort complete with three championship golf courses, gourmet dining, a spa and a children’s club. The villa also provides entry to the members-only Sandy Lane Estate Beach Club for all guests.
Almost every room in Laughing Waters is designed to provide picturesque views of the blooming flora and fauna or the deep blue Caribbean Sea. The property is a peaceful and beautiful short walk through lush greenery to Sandy Lane Beach.
“Walking around the property, you couldn’t just be anywhere in the world; you know you’re in Barbados because of the distinct types of trees and plants and overall atmosphere; it’s spectacular,” Pearson says.

Evoking a specific emotion is an essential factor in design, and in this home, Pearson executed this challenge flawlessly. More intimate spaces encourage relaxation through the implementation of neutral color palates and natural materials such as stone and wood. The gathering spaces incorporate energizing colors, like cobalt blues, vibrant reds, interesting patterns and multifaceted chandeliers, creating dynamic rooms fit for any occasion.
Pearson’s expertise transformed this space from a classic beach house into a truly unique and luxurious home. Laughing Waters is more than just a property that you can rent; it’s a serene getaway that tells the story of comprehensive design and unparalleled luxury.
