“The atmosphere is Electric, especially on Saturday!” Tom King, Chairman of Waste Management’s host organization, the Thunderbirds, says. “Expect 200-250 thousand people in attendance on Saturday. Each day represents special moments recognizing police, fire, military, helping kids, etc.”

The 2025 Waste Management Phoenix Open is hosted by the Thunderbirds, a non-profit organization formed in 1986 to distribute monies raised through the WM Phoenix Open golf tournament. The Thunderbirds Charities Board consists of 15 board members from varying professional backgrounds.

King explains his experiences at the WM Phoenix Open,

“My first time attending was in 1992 as a student at ASU! I remember being able to have a beer and laugh while watching a golf tournament,” King says. “This will be my 18th year as a Thunderbird and 26th attending. Every year, we get excited to host the PEOPLE’S OPEN! Watching this grow has been the most rewarding thing ever! The amount of money raised makes the hard work worth it.”
